India’s musical prowess reached new heights at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards 2024, where the fusion band ‘Shakti,’ led by Shankar Mahadevan and Zakir Hussain, emerged victorious with their latest masterpiece, ‘This Moment.’ The album not only captivated hearts but also secured the prestigious ‘Best Global Music Album’ award.
In a captivating scene captured by the Grammys, Mahadevan and fellow band member Ganesh Rajagopalan gracefully accepted the accolade on stage. The official post on X (formerly Twitter) celebrated the achievement, stating, “Congrats Best Global Music Album winner – ‘This Moment’ Shakti. #GRAMMYs.”
During his acceptance speech, Mahadevan expressed gratitude to his fellow musicians, family, friends, and, notably, India. His heartfelt dedication of the award to his wife elicited a resounding cheer from the audience.

‘This Moment,’ released on June 30 last year, features eight soul-stirring tracks by John McLaughlin (guitar synth), Zakir Hussain (tabla), Shankar Mahadevan (vocalist), V Selvaganesh (percussionist), and Ganesh Rajagopalan (violinist). The album competed for the Grammy with esteemed artists like Susana Baca, Bokante, Burna Boy, and Davido.
In a remarkable feat, Zakir Hussain secured yet another Grammy for ‘Best Global Music Performance’ for his contribution to ‘Pashto,’ alongside Bela Fleck and Edgar Meyer, featuring virtuoso flute player Rakesh Chaurasia. Hussain’s triple win at the Grammys, coupled with Chaurasia’s double awards, marked a historic achievement for the Indian music maestros.
