Shakuntala Devi has been rated 6.3 out of 10 by IMDb.
The movie revolves around the extraordinary story of Shakuntala Devi.
A woman who becomes skilled at solving complex maths problems. She was the world-renowned mathematician who lived her life on her own terms.
While the film pays tribute to her genius as a mathematician, it also humanizes her as a woman and mother, in trying to capture her indomitable spirit.
Through the lens of her relationship with her daughter Anu, the film highlights their very different struggles and aspirations.
The first half of Shakuntala Devi is all about her childhood and her early life in Europe. She had a strained relationship with her mother.
It is hard to invest in Shakuntala Devi’s character. She often feels that there is no one who did fully understand her, why she did what she did, and the intricacies of what went on in her brilliant mind.
The second part of the movie walks a tightrope between career and motherhood, and we see it in Shakuntala Devi’s as well as Anu’s portrayal. Moreover when the latter becomes a mother and has to balance her work-life with motherhood.
The fact should be appreciated that Shakuntala Devi did not demonize a career-oriented woman for following her dreams, and it shows that rifts in families can occur in both traditional conservative families as well as in modern families.
However, in their attempt to humanize the great mathematical genius, the filmmakers have relied heavily on the domestic affairs of Shakuntala Devi, particularly her maternal misadventures.
