In a heartbreaking turn of events, the entertainment industry is mourning the untimely demise of Suhani Bhatnagar, the talented young actress who played the role of young Babita Phogat in the blockbuster film, Dangal. At just 19, Suhani has left a void in Bollywood that echoes far beyond the silver screen.
The news was confirmed by Aamir Khan Productions, co-star Aamir Khan’s own production company. The announcement on X came as a shock to fans and colleagues alike. The cause of her sudden passing remains unclear, but a recent media interaction with her parents has shed light on the circumstances.
Suhani’s father revealed that two months ago, the actor began experiencing swelling in her hands, initially dismissed as normal. However, the swelling progressed to her entire body. Despite consulting multiple doctors, her illness remained unidentified until she was admitted to AIIMS about 11 days ago. Tests revealed she had dermatomyositis, a rare autoimmune disease. The treatment involved steroids, which unfortunately weakened her immune system.
Recovery from dermatomyositis is a lengthy process, but due to her compromised immunity, Suhani contracted an infection in the hospital. This led to complications in her lungs, causing fluid buildup and breathing difficulties. On the evening of February 16, Suhani succumbed to these health complications.
Suhani’s mother expressed immense pride in her daughter’s achievements. Suhani, a model since childhood, was chosen for ‘Dangal’ from among 25,000 children. Pursuing Mass Communication and Journalism in her second year, Suhani aspired to complete her studies before returning to the world of films.
Aamir Khan Productions conveyed their condolences, recognizing Suhani as a talented team player who played an integral role in making Dangal a success. Director Nitesh Tiwari expressed shock and sorrow over the loss of such a vibrant and happy soul.
The Bollywood fraternity, including Zaira Wasim, Kiran Rao, and Yami Gautam, has been deeply affected by Suhani’s untimely departure.
Yami Gautam expressed her grief on X, writing, “Just learnt about a young actor losing her life. Very painful news. Strength to her family.” Casting director Mukesh Chabbra paid tribute to Suhani by posting photos and videos, recalling her incredible talent and the lasting impact of her performances.
Reacting to Mukesh’s post, Hina Khan dropped a praying hands emoji in the comment section. Zaira Wasim, Suhani’s Dangal co-star, tweeted, “I’m shocked beyond words by the news of Suhani Bhatnagar’s passing. My heart goes out to her family during this incredibly difficult time. The thought of what her parents must be experiencing fills me with so much sorrow. Utterly speechless. My heartfelt condolences.”
As the industry grapples with the untimely loss of a promising talent, Suhani Bhatnagar’s legacy as the young Babita Phogat in Dangal will be remembered fondly. Her sudden departure at such a tender age has left the cinematic world in mourning, emphasizing the fragile nature of life, even for those who shine brightly on the silver screen. Suhani’s memory will forever be etched in the hearts of those who admired her work and the audiences who witnessed her promising journey in the world of cinema.
