The prestigious Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, has witnessed a historic year in 2024 with a record-breaking number of five distinguished personalities being honored for their exceptional contributions. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on February 9 the recipients, spanning various fields, each leaving an indelible mark on the nation.

1. Karpoori Thakur (Posthumous):

Bihar’s former chief minister and renowned socialist leader, popularly known as ‘Jan Nayak’ (people’s leader), will be posthumously honored. Karpoori Thakur, a key figure in Bihar’s political landscape, becomes the 49th recipient of this prestigious award.

2. Lal Krishna Advani:

A stalwart of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and former deputy prime minister, Lal Krishna Advani, played a pivotal role in shaping the party since its inception in 1980. He served as both the home minister and deputy prime minister under Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s leadership from 1999 to 2004.

3. Pamulaparthi Venkata Narasimha Rao (Posthumous):

The ex-Prime Minister, who passed away in 2004, is posthumously conferred with Bharat Ratna. PV Narasimha Rao, a respected Telugu leader, served as prime minister from 1991 to 1996 and is widely acclaimed for his significant role in introducing economic reforms.

 4. Chaudhary Charan Singh (Posthumous):

Another former Prime Minister and prominent Jat leader from western Uttar Pradesh, Chaudhary Charan Singh, is posthumously awarded Bharat Ratna. He played a crucial role in spearheading anti-Congress politics during a period when the party held dominant influence.

5. Mankombu Sambasivan Swaminathan (Posthumous):

An eminent agronomist, M.S. Swaminathan, is the fifth recipient of Bharat Ratna. Recognized for his substantial contributions to agriculture and the welfare of farmers, Swaminathan revolutionized Indian agriculture, ensuring food security and prosperity for the nation.
