Sunil Gavaskar, the former Indian batsman, offered valuable advice to Dhruv Jurel after his unconventional dismissal during the ongoing Test series against England. The guidance comes just days after Gavaskar drew comparisons between Jurel’s performance and the legendary MS Dhoni.
Jurel had showcased remarkable composure, contributing a composed knock of 90 and an unbeaten 39, playing a pivotal role in India’s triumph over England in the fourth Test in Ranchi. However, the fifth Test in Dharamsala presented a different scenario, with Gavaskar expressing discontent over the youngster’s shot choice leading to his dismissal.
Jurel, batting at No. 7, fell prey to a needless slog attempt against Shoaib Bashir, resulting in a catch at long-on by Ben Duckett. Gavaskar, in the commentary box, criticized the shot, emphasizing that Jurel had no reason to take such risks, especially with the team comfortably positioned and Ravindra Jadeja at the other end.
Commenting on the dismissal, Gavaskar remarked, “Jurel will be very disappointed at that shot…To get it at the bottom of the bat…You did not have to play that shot. No wonder Jurel is looking at his bat very, very upset with himself. And he should be.”

As the replay unfolded, Gavaskar took the opportunity to counsel Jurel on not taking anything for granted in Test cricket. Referencing past experiences, Gavaskar urged the young batsman to stay vigilant and maintain a learning mindset, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of the sport.
“Always be mindful of what happened in Hyderabad… Never take anything for granted. Not in Test cricket. It does not make any sense,” cautioned Gavaskar.
The incident added an interesting twist to the ongoing Test series, highlighting the importance of learning from every ball. Cricket enthusiasts are keenly observing how Jurel and the Indian team absorb these lessons as the series unfolds.
In the unpredictable world of Test cricket, Gavaskar’s words serve as a reminder for players to approach each moment with focus and respect for the game’s nuances. The journey continues, and every dismissal becomes a lesson etched in the collective memory of the players and fans alike.
